Gerald Benney Canister | Silver & Enamel
A silver and enamel holder created by Gerald Benney, a famed British silversmith of the 20th century. The surface of the holder is textured, with the maker's signature bark-effect overlaid on top, producing a complex visual and result.
Gerald Benney was a 20th century British silversmith whose style was deeply inspired by modern Scandinavian design. He had the distinction of being the first British craftsperson to hold four royal warrants simultaneously, and his work is characterised by minimalist lines and clean forms, which achieved both private and commercial success.
The surface of the holder is textured with a bark effect, producing a complex visual and tactile result. The pull-off cap features the same texture, but with a variegated green enamelling placed at the top. A cream border separates the enamelling from the rest of the lid. Meanwhile, the interior of the holder is lined with a deep black leather.
The canister would be excellent if used for its original purpose, however, it can also be turned into a pen holder, a storage space for cherished items, or simply enjoyed a piece of artful craft.
